The Cacay

Treasure of Colombian Biodiversity

FRUIT AND USES

Because of its multiple uses, some communities call the Cacay “The Vegetable Cow”.

Environmental supply required

Cacay (Caryodendron orinocense Karsten) is a humid tropical tree native to the Orinoco and Amazon regions. Its cultivation requires drained soils, with altitudes below 800 meters above sea level, rainfall above 2,000 mm/year, relative humidity higher than 70% and temperature above 25°C.

Why grow Cacay?

It is a more profitable alternative to other late yielding crops.
It is a species resistant to pests and diseases, adapted to acid soils.
The fruit falls to the ground in the summer, which facilitates harvesting, reduces costs and allows harvesting to be mechanized.
It allows associations with other crops such as cocoa, banana, corn, fodder, among others.
The crop is viable from small extensions, which makes it ideal for peasant economy.
Being a dry fruit, it can be stored and transported over long distances.

THE PLANTATION

Husk: It is used as cattle feed or as organic fertilizer.

Shell: It has high caloric value and is slow burning, which makes it an excellent ecological fuel.

Walnut: It is rich in protein, minerals, omegas and fiber, which is why it is considered a “Super nut“.

Oil: It is extracted from walnuts and its properties surpass olive oil.
It has wide applications in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries.

Flour: It is a high source of protein, fiber, omegas and calcium, ideal as a food supplement.

Honey: Our bees collect the nectar produced by the tree in its leaves, and turn it into a unique and delicious honey.

Milk: From the flour we prepare nut milk, which is an excellent substitute for animal milk and is used for functional beverages.
